Between August 5th - August 8th, 2023, wildfires ripped through rural communities based around Odeceixe and Sao Teotonio, causing massive damage to homes, rural tourism projects and farms. Over 1400 people were evacuated from their homes. The National Civil Protection Service said about 1,000 firefighters, 320 vehicles and nine aircraft were deployed. Approximately 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) were scorched.
